5 Important Questions to Ask Before Booking Your Wedding Photographer

Okay, so you’ve said YES, picked a date, maybe even locked down a venue—now it’s time to find your wedding photographer (hi 👋). But before you dive headfirst into dreamy Instagram feeds, here are 5 questions you NEED to ask to make sure you’re booking someone who’s the right fit for your vibe, your day, and your love story.
1. How would you describe your style?
Think of this like dating. If you’re into bright, natural, emotional images and the photographer specializes in moody and dramatic edits… that’s kind of a mismatch. Ask how they shoot, edit, and what they focus on—posed, candid, somewhere in-between?
(For me? Candid, fun, bright and airy, and a little bit of golden light magic.)
2. Have you shot at my venue (or something like it)?
Whether you’re getting married in downtown Raleigh, at a barn in Smithfield, or in your aunt’s backyard—your photographer should know how to handle different lighting and spaces. If they’ve shot there before, awesome! If not, no biggie—just make sure they’re confident working with new places.
3. What’s actually included in your packages?
Don’t get caught off guard—ask what’s included! Things like:
- How many hours of coverage?
- Second shooter or solo?
- Engagement session?
- Turnaround time?
Transparency = peace of mind.
4. Can I see a full gallery (not just the Insta highlights)?
Anyone can post the best 10 photos from a wedding—but can they tell the full story? Ask to see a full wedding gallery so you can check out how they handle everything from getting ready to dancing your face off at the reception.
5. What’s your vibe on a wedding day?
Are they chill and behind the scenes? Helpful and directive when needed? You’ll be spending A LOT of time with your photographer—make sure they’re someone who keeps the energy good and makes you feel at ease.
Bottom line?
Photos matter—but how those photos are created matters just as much. Ask these questions, trust your gut, and you’ll find the right Raleigh wedding photographer for YOU.
