You’ve probably heard the term “mini session,” and maybe you’ve thought, That sounds perfect! My kids won’t stand still for an hour.
Or maybe your first thought was, Fifteen minutes? My child would never smile in just 15 minutes!
Or maybe you’re simply wondering…what exactly is a mini session?
The truth is, mini sessions can be an amazing fit for some families—but they’re not the best choice for everyone. So let’s talk about what mini sessions are, who they’re designed for, and how to decide if a Raleigh fall mini session is the right fit for your family.

Thinking about booking Raleigh fall mini sessions? This guide explains what mini sessions are, who they’re best for, what to expect, and how to decide whether a mini session or full session is the right fit for your family. You’ll also find details about my upcoming fall mini sessions at the North Carolina Museum of Art and Topsail Beach.
Mini sessions aren’t the perfect fit for every family—and that’s okay! They’re designed for a very specific type of session, and for the right people, they’re absolutely worth it.
Mini sessions are a great fit if:
Mini sessions are designed to be quick, simple, and fun. If your photography goals fit into one of these categories, you’ll likely love the mini session experience.

While mini sessions are a wonderful option for many families, there are times when a full session is absolutely worth the extra time. A full session allows us to slow down, follow your children’s lead, and create a more diverse gallery without feeling rushed.
A full session may be the better choice if:
If you’re ever unsure which option is best, I’m always happy to help! My goal is to help you choose the session that best fits your family, your goals, and the experience you’re looking for.

If you’ve never booked a mini session before, you might be wondering how we can create a beautiful gallery in just 15 minutes. The answer is simple—we come prepared, stay moving, and make every minute count!
Before your session, you’ll fill out a short questionnaire so I can get to know your family before we ever meet. It helps me learn names, relationships, and anything else that will help your session run smoothly. And whatever you do…don’t skip the question about your kids’ favorite things! Whether they’re obsessed with dinosaurs, Taylor Swift, Bluey, construction trucks, or princesses, I use those little details to get on their good side as quickly as possible. You’d be surprised how much easier photos go when I already know exactly what to talk to them about!
On the day of your session, I recommend arriving about 10–15 minutes early so everyone is ready to begin at your scheduled time. Since mini sessions are booked back-to-back, we’ll need to start and end on time so every family receives their full session.
Once we begin, I’ll guide you every step of the way. I’ll start with a few classic smiling portraits before moving into prompts that encourage genuine laughter, connection, and natural interactions. Don’t worry if your kids don’t want to stand perfectly still—that’s rarely the goal! Some of my favorite images happen in the in-between moments.
After your session, I’ll carefully hand-edit your images and deliver your online gallery, where you’ll be able to download your photos and order professional-quality prints if you’d like.
Mini sessions may be short, but they’re thoughtfully planned to give you a beautiful collection of timeless images while keeping the experience fun, relaxed, and stress-free for the whole family.

This year, I’m offering fall mini sessions at three beautiful North Carolina locations, each with its own unique style. Whether you’re dreaming of colorful fall foliage, historic oak trees, or a sunset on the beach, there’s a mini session for you.
If you’re looking for a classic fall setting near Raleigh, the North Carolina Museum of Art is one of my favorite locations. The winding paths, open fields, and beautiful trees create a timeless backdrop that’s perfect for families, couples, maternity sessions, and updated portraits.
The Historic Oaks location is full of towering oak trees and gorgeous golden light. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a classic Southern feel with plenty of natural beauty. This location photographs beautifully in early October and creates a timeless gallery you’ll love for years to come.
Want something a little different? My Topsail Beach mini sessions offer soft dunes, sea oats, and beautiful sunset light along the North Carolina coast. Fall is one of my favorite times to photograph at the beach because the weather is cooler, the beaches are quieter, and the light is absolutely gorgeous.
No matter which location you choose, you’ll receive the same guided experience, a 15-minute session, and a beautifully edited gallery full of timeless images.

Choosing outfits doesn’t have to be stressful—I promise! The right clothing can make a huge difference in how your photos look, but the most important thing is choosing something that feels comfortable and true to your family.
For fall mini sessions, I recommend soft, neutral colors and earthy tones like cream, beige, camel, olive green, rust, dusty blue, burgundy, and warm browns. These colors photograph beautifully against North Carolina’s fall foliage and create a timeless look you’ll love for years to come.
Instead of everyone wearing the exact same outfit, try coordinating colors rather than matching. Mixing textures like knit sweaters, dresses, denim, corduroy, and layers adds depth and interest without feeling overly busy.
One thing I recommend avoiding is clothing with large logos, bright neon colors, or busy patterns that can pull attention away from your family’s faces.
Each mini session lasts 15 minutes. While that may sound short, we can create a beautiful gallery without feeling rushed.
Yes! I’ve photographed alot of families, and I find that 15 minutes is often enough amount of time for little ones. We move quickly, keep things fun, and focus on genuine interactions rather than forcing perfect poses. However, if you children are very shy or you will be very disappointed if you child doesn’t warm up in 15 minutes I would recommend booking a full session. You can read more about my full family sessions here.
Don’t stress—I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve! Before your session, you’ll fill out a questionnaire that helps me get to know your children and their interests. Whether they’re obsessed with dinosaurs, Bluey, princesses, or construction trucks, I come prepared to make friends quickly. Some of the sweetest photos happen when kids are simply being themselves.
Mini sessions are designed for one immediate family. If you’re hoping to include grandparents or multiple families, I recommend booking a full family session instead so we have enough time for all the different groupings.
If the weather doesn’t cooperate, I’ll email everyone with a new rain date or reschedule options. I keep a close eye on the forecast and make weather decisions as early as possible.
Each gallery includes 10 images with options to upgrade to the full gallery.
You’ll receive your online gallery within 2–3 weeks of your session.
Yes! Your gallery includes high-resolution digital images with a print release, so you’re welcome to print them wherever you’d like. You’ll also have the option to order professional-quality prints directly through your gallery for the best color and print quality.
You can view available dates, locations, pricing, and reserve your session by visiting my Mini Sessions page here. I recommend booking early since fall minis typically sell out each year.
