Six Month Photos: Why This Might Be My Favorite Baby Stage

Six Month Photos: Why This Might Be My Favorite Baby Stage

One minute you’re bringing home this tiny, sleepy newborn who spends most of the day curled up in your arms. Then somehow you blink and they’re sitting in front of you, belly laughing, grabbing everything within reach, and looking like an actual little person.

The first year goes so fast, and six months is one of those stages that can easily get overlooked.

We remember to schedule newborn photos. We start planning the first birthday and cake smash months in advance. But right in the middle is one of my absolute favorite stages to photograph: six month milestone.

At six months, your baby isn’t a sleepy newborn anymore, but they aren’t quite on the move like they will be at one year. They’re usually happy to sit in one spot, interact with us, and show off all those expressions you’ve gotten to know over the last few months.

And trust me, the gummy smiles alone are worth it.

Six month photos are the perfect way to document that sweet in-between stage when your baby is starting to sit, smile, giggle, grab their toes, and show off their personality. Often called a sitter session, these photos capture one of the biggest transformations of your baby’s first year.

What Is a Six Month Milestone Session?

Six month photos are often called a sitter session because we typically schedule them around the time your baby is learning to sit independently.

That doesn’t mean your baby needs to be sitting perfectly on the exact day they turn six months old!

Every baby develops at their own pace. Some are sitting like tiny professionals at six months, while others need a little more time. I would much rather schedule your session around your baby’s developmental stage than worry about hitting an exact date on the calendar.

These sessions are also completely different from newborn photos. Instead of sleepy poses and wraps, we’re photographing all the things your baby can suddenly do.

Sitting. Grabbing their toes. Lying on their belly. Playing with their hands. Looking around the studio. Smiling at Mom and Dad behind me.

It’s simple, baby-led, and honestly just really fun.

Six Month Photos Show SO Much Personality

This is probably my favorite thing about this age.

By six months, you know your baby’s personality. You know the smile they make when they’re really excited. You know what makes them belly laugh. You know their serious little stare and the face they make when they’re trying to figure something out.

And all of that comes out during their photos.

I don’t expect a six-month-old to sit perfectly still and smile directly at my camera for an entire session. I actually don’t want them to.

I want the gummy grin.

The drool.

The toes in their mouth.

The confused look they give me when I make a ridiculous noise behind my camera.

Those little expressions are what make your baby your baby at this exact stage, and they’re the things you’ll forget much faster than you think.

Why Six Months Is Such a Special Part of the First Year

If you compare your baby’s newborn photos to their six month photos, it’s almost hard to believe you’re looking at the same baby.

They change that much.

That’s why I love documenting more than just the beginning and end of the first year.

Newborn photos tell the story of how tiny they were when you first brought them home. First birthday photos celebrate the little person they’ve become.

But six month photos document everything happening in between.

They’re still little enough to have those chunky baby rolls and gummy smiles, but big enough that their personality is starting to shine through.

It’s such a short stage.

And before you know it, they’re crawling away from you.

When Should You Schedule Six Month Photos?

Despite the name, your six month photos don’t have to happen exactly at six months old.

For sitter sessions, I recommend watching your baby’s milestones instead of the calendar.

Ideally, we want baby to have good head control and be working toward sitting independently. If your baby turns six months old and isn’t quite there yet, that’s completely okay! Waiting a few weeks can make a huge difference.

If you’re hoping to document multiple stages throughout your baby’s first year, though, I recommend reaching out ahead of time rather than waiting until the milestone arrives. That gives us plenty of time to plan your session and choose the best date.

Six Month Photo Ideas

One of the best things about six month photos is that they don’t need an elaborate setup to be adorable.

Your baby is the focus.

I love simple setups that let us see their little features and personality without distracting from them. We can use soft colors, textures, simple props, and outfits that complement your baby’s personality.

We can photograph baby sitting, on their belly, playing with their toes, lying on their back, or interacting with a simple prop.

And don’t feel like you have to choose stereotypical “boy” or “girl” setups either. Your baby’s session can be colorful and playful, soft and neutral, or somewhere in between.

A favorite toy, meaningful heirloom, or special outfit can also be incorporated if there’s something you’d love to remember from this stage.

Sometimes the simplest six month photos end up being my favorites.

Don’t Skip the Middle of Their First Year

There are so many “firsts” packed into twelve months.

Newborn.

Smiling.

Rolling.

Sitting.

Crawling.

Standing.

And suddenly you’re ordering a birthday cake wondering where your tiny baby went.

That’s why I love milestone photography so much. Instead of only having professional photos from the very beginning and their first birthday, you get to look back at the little stages that happened along the way.

Six months is right in the middle of that story—and it’s a really good chapter.

How to Prepare for Your Six Month Photos

The biggest thing you can do is try to schedule around your baby’s normal routine.

A rested baby with a full belly is usually a much happier model!

Bring anything you normally need to keep baby comfortable, along with an extra outfit and a favorite toy or lovey if they have one.

And if your baby decides they aren’t interested in smiling that day?

That’s okay too.

Babies are babies. We take breaks when we need them, give them time to warm up, and work around what they’re giving us. Some of my favorite photos aren’t huge smiles at all—they’re the serious expressions, curious looks, and tiny details that show exactly who they were at that age.

Frequently Asked Questions About Six Month Photos

What should my baby wear for six month photos?

Simple outfits photograph beautifully at this age. I recommend avoiding very busy patterns or large graphics so the focus stays on your baby. Soft colors, simple textures, rompers, overalls, dresses, and even a classic diaper-only look can all work beautifully. The newborn nerds have outfits that match photography back drops to give a monochromatic look, which is a really fun style of session!

Does my baby have to be exactly six months old?

No! Six months is a general milestone, not a deadline. For a sitter session, your baby’s development is more important than their exact age. Some babies are ready right at six months, while others may photograph better closer to seven or eight months.

What if my baby isn’t sitting independently yet?

That’s completely normal. We can photograph baby safely in other positions, including tummy time and lying down, or wait a little longer if your main goal is to get those classic sitting photos.

How long does a six month photo session take?

I keep milestone sessions baby-friendly and allow time for your little one to warm up, take a quick break, or have a snack if needed. Babies aren’t expected to “perform” for the camera the entire time—we work at their pace. Usually 30 minutes is plenty of time.

Can siblings or parents be included?

Absolutely. Even when baby is the main focus, including a few photos with the people they love can be such a sweet addition to documenting this stage. If you are looking for mostly family photos it is better to book a family session.

How do I book six month photos?

If your baby is approaching the six month milestone, reach out before they’re officially ready here! We can plan around their age and development and choose a session date that gives us the best chance of documenting that adorable sitter stage.

Ready to Document Your Baby’s Six Month Milestone?

Six months doesn’t get quite as much attention as the newborn stage or that big first birthday, but it might just be my favorite.

They’re squishy. They’re smiley. Their little personality has arrived in full force.

And they’re only going to be this version of themselves for such a short time.
