When to Book Maternity Photos | Clayton Maternity Photographer

Mother holding her pregnant bump next to the father in blue dress while posing for their clayton maternity photographer

Whether you just saw those two pink lines or you’re already feeling tiny kicks and watching your bump grow, congratulations, mama! 🤍 I am a clayton maternity photographer that knows this is such a special season of anticipation and excitement. No matter where you are in your pregnancy, let’s talk about maternity photos — and when you should book with me to beautifully capture this chapter before your little one arrives.

When Should You Take Maternity Photos?

As a Clayton maternity photographer I recommend having your session is between 28–34 weeks.

At this stage:

  • Your bump is bumpin’ and clearly visible
  • You’re usually still comfortable enough to move and pose
  • Swelling and late-pregnancy fatigue (hopefully) haven’t fully set in

Every pregnancy is different, but this window tends to be the most flattering and comfortable for most moms.

When Should You Reach Out to Book to your Clayton maternity photograper?

If you’re planning ahead (which I always recommend!), you should reach out to book your session around 15–20 weeks.

Why that early?

  • Spring and fall dates fill quickly
  • It guarantees you a spot during your ideal week(s)
  • It gives us time to plan wardrobe and location
  • You can secure both maternity and newborn sessions together

As a Clayton maternity photographer serving families in Clayton, Raleigh, Smithfield and surrounding areas, my calendar typically books several weeks in advance — especially during peak seasons.

Studio or Outdoor? Two Beautiful Options

One of the best parts of planning your maternity session is choosing the vibe.

Studio Maternity Photos

My studio is conveniently located about 15–20 minutes from Clayton, making it an easy drive for busy moms.

Studio sessions are perfect if you love:

  • Simple, classic, timeless images
  • Bright, light-filled photos
  • A clean white background aesthetic
  • A controlled, comfortable environment (hello air conditioning ☺️)

Studio maternity photos feel polished and heirloom-worthy — the kind of images that never go out of style.

Outdoor Maternity Photos (Clayton & Raleigh Area)

If you prefer a more natural, romantic feel, outdoor sessions are beautiful.

I offer multiple locations conveniently located around Clayton and Raleigh, and I provide a location guide to help you choose the perfect setting.

Outdoor sessions are perfect for:

  • Golden hour glow
  • Soft greenery or tall grass
  • A more candid, natural vibe
  • Including your partner or older children in a relaxed setting

Want something coastal? I also offer beach maternity sessions near Hampstead and Wilmington for families who love that dreamy ocean backdrop.

What Should You Wear for Maternity Photos?

Wardrobe makes a huge difference in how your final images look and feel.

Here’s what I recommend:

  • Dresses for mom (they photograph beautifully and highlight your bump)
  • Light pastels or soft neutrals
  • Flowy fabrics that move naturally
  • Coordinating colors — not matching identically

Think cohesive, not copy-and-paste outfits.

Soft creams, dusty blues, sage greens, blush, and warm neutrals all photograph beautifully — whether in studio or outdoors.

If you’re unsure, I’ll guide you through outfit planning so everything feels effortless and flattering.

Some of my favorite dresses come from here.

Why Booking Early Matters

Pregnancy feels long some days… but looking back, it’s a blur.

Booking your maternity session around 15–20 weeks ensures you don’t miss that perfect 28–34 week window. It also gives us time to create something that truly reflects this season of life — whether that’s bright and timeless in the studio or glowing and natural outdoors.

If you’re looking for a Clayton maternity photographer who offers both studio and outdoor options (plus beach sessions near Hampstead and Wilmington), I’d love to help you plan something beautiful.

Because this season — the quiet anticipation before baby arrives — deserves to be remembered. 💛
