Fall might be one of my favorite times of year in North Carolina. The weather finally starts cooling down, the leaves begin changing, and there are so many excuses to get outside with your family.

As a mom of two little boys and a family photographer in the Raleigh area, I spend a LOT of time outside in the fall. Between family outings and photographing fall sessions, there are a few places and the best fall activities in Raleigh I find myself coming back to year after year.

If you’re looking for things to do in Raleigh in the fall, these are some of my family’s favorites—from pumpkin patches and the State Fair to seasonal beer, fall colors, and something a little scarier once the kids are home!

If you have younger kids, Naylor Family Farm is one Best Fall Activities near Raleigh.

One of the things I like most about Naylor is that there is actually a lot for kids to DO. You’re not driving all the way to a pumpkin patch just to take a picture with a pumpkin and head home. There are slides, tractors, a toddler area, inflatables, swings, a pumpkin patch, a hayride and plenty of other activities to keep little kids entertained.

For 2026, Naylor Family Farm’s fall season runs September 19 through November 1. A regular Farm Pass includes admission to the farm’s attractions, a hayride to the pumpkin patch and a pumpkin. Children two and under are free with a paying adult.

If you’re going with toddlers or preschoolers, I’d plan enough time to let them explore instead of trying to squeeze the farm between other plans. There is enough there that this can easily be the main event of your day.

Naylor Family Farm is located in Fuquay-Varina, so it’s a little outside Raleigh, but I think it’s worth adding to your fall list if you have kids.

Make the North Carolina State Fair a Fall Tradition

The North Carolina State Fair is a non-negotiable fall activity in our family. I believe it is one of the best fall activities in Raleigh.

My husband and I go every year because the fair always falls around our anniversary. At this point, it has become part of how we celebrate and one of those traditions that immediately feels like fall to me.

There is obviously no shortage of things to do once you’re there. You have rides, games, animals, exhibits and all of the ridiculous fair food that you absolutely did not need but are going to eat anyway.

The 2026 North Carolina State Fair runs October 15–25 in Raleigh.

If you’re taking little kids, I’d go into it knowing that the fair is a much bigger outing than some of the other activities on this list. There is a lot of walking, a lot happening at once, and plenty to see. Give yourself time and don’t feel like you have to do everything.

And even if you don’t have kids, I think the State Fair is one of those Raleigh fall experiences that’s just fun to turn into a yearly tradition. Pick your favorite food, ride the same ride every year, take the same picture—whatever makes it yours.

Spend a Fall Afternoon at Raleigh Brewing

Not every fall activity needs to involve a pumpkin patch!

Sometimes a laid-back afternoon outside with a seasonal beer sounds pretty great, which is one reason we enjoy the JoCo location of Raleigh Brewing.

It’s a family-friendly outdoor brewery, so it’s a nice option when you want to enjoy the cooler fall weather without planning an entire kid-centered excursion. We can bring the kids along, hang out outside, and try one of their seasonal beers.

I especially like having something like this on our fall list because it doesn’t require a ton of planning. Not every Saturday needs to be an elaborate fall outing—sometimes you just want somewhere the whole family can hang out and enjoy being outside now that it’s finally not 95 degrees..

Get Actually Scared at Darkside Haunted Estates

Okay, this one is NOT my recommendation for a relaxing outing with toddlers. 😂

If you’re looking for something scary to do around Raleigh for Halloween, Darkside Haunted Estates in Middlesex is one of our traditions.

I’ve personally been, it is definitely scary, and my sister and I go every year.

Darkside has an outdoor haunted walking trail that’s more than a mile long and takes you through a bunch of different haunted scenes and attractions. This isn’t a five-minute haunted house where you’re back in the parking lot before your heart rate even has time to go up.

If you like haunted attractions, this is one I’d actually recommend making the drive for.

They also offer select special events, including a lower-scare family event, but their regular haunted experience is the reason we go. Check their current schedule and ticket information before heading out because operating nights vary throughout the season.

See the Fall Colors at the North Carolina Museum of Art

If you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy fall colors without buying a ticket to an event, the North Carolina Museum of Art is one of my favorite spots in Raleigh.

Admittedly, I’m usually at the Art Museum with a camera in my hand rather than taking a leisurely family stroll. I photograph a lot of sessions there, so I’ve gotten to watch the landscape change throughout the season.

In my experience, things really start looking beautiful toward the end of October.

The Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park is free and open daily from dawn to dusk. There are 164 acres to explore, along with art installations, gardens, a pond and 4.7 miles of recreational trails.

You definitely don’t need to be visiting the museum itself to enjoy the property. Pack a picnic, take a walk, let the kids explore, or just go when you need somewhere pretty to spend an afternoon outside.

When Do the Leaves Change in Raleigh?

One thing to know about fall in Raleigh is that our leaves don’t necessarily hit their best color when the calendar first says “fall.”

Fall color around Raleigh generally starts getting especially good in late October and can continue into November. The exact timing changes from year to year depending on the weather.

As a photographer, late October is when I really start paying attention to the trees. I’ve photographed at the North Carolina Museum of Art during this time of year, and it can be gorgeous once the color starts coming through.

You also don’t need every single tree to be at “peak” for a location to look beautiful. A mix of green, yellow, orange and red can actually photograph really well.

So if October arrives and everything is still green, don’t panic. Raleigh’s prettiest fall color often comes a little later than people expect.

Which Raleigh Fall Activities Are Best With Little Kids?

Fall outings look a little different once toddlers are involved.

If you’re planning something with younger kids, Naylor Family Farm would probably be my pick from this list when you want an actual fall activity. There is enough to keep them entertained, and they can run around and explore instead of constantly being told not to touch something.

The State Fair can also be a ton of fun with kids, but I’d treat it as a bigger outing. Bring the stroller or wagon, wear comfortable shoes and accept ahead of time that you probably aren’t going to see everything.

The Museum Park at the North Carolina Museum of Art is a great option when you want something much simpler. The park is free, there’s plenty of room to walk around, and you don’t have to feel like you wasted money if your toddler decides after 45 minutes that the outing is officially over.

My biggest advice with little kids is not to over-plan it. Pick the thing you actually want to do, give the kids time to enjoy it, and go home before everybody is exhausted and miserable. A two-hour outing everyone enjoyed beats an eight-hour fall bucket-list marathon any day.

Updating Your Family Photos Can Be Part of the Fall Fun

While you’re making your fall plans, this is also one of my favorite times of year to update family photos.

But I don’t think family photos should feel like another chore you have to check off your fall to-do list.

I know how stressful it can feel getting everyone dressed, getting out of the house on time and wondering whether your kids are actually going to cooperate once you arrive.

Here’s the good news: I don’t need your kids to stand perfectly still and smile at me for the entire session.

I want them to explore. I want them to play. We’ll walk around, let them move, make them laugh and give them space to be themselves. I’ll guide you when we need it, but your kids don’t have to suddenly turn into tiny professional models.

Some of my favorite images happen in the moments between the posed photos anyway.

My goal is for your session to feel like something you did together as a family—not something everyone had to survive to get one picture for the Christmas card.

Fall mini sessions are especially great for families who want updated photos without committing to a full session. They’re quick, laid-back and give us enough time to create beautiful photos without asking little kids to hold it together for an hour.

Fall always seems like it lasts forever when September starts and then somehow October is over in approximately five minutes.

You don’t have to do every pumpkin patch, festival and fall event you see on Instagram. Pick a few things your family will genuinely enjoy and make those your traditions.

For us, that means the State Fair around our anniversary, taking the kids somewhere like Naylor Family Farm, enjoying an easy afternoon outside, watching Raleigh finally start changing colors and, for my sister and me, voluntarily paying people to scare us at Darkside every year.

Those are the things that end up making fall feel like fall.
