Clayton Newborn Photographer | What to Expect During Your Newborn Session

What to Expect During Your Newborn Session | Clayton Newborn Photographer

If you’re preparing for a newborn session, here’s the good news: this experience is meant to be easy. Newborn sessions are slow, flexible, and completely baby-led — with lots of breaks, snuggles, and grace built in.

As a Clayton newborn photographer, my goal is to create a calm experience that feels natural and stress-free while documenting this fleeting season.

Timing & Scheduling

I typically recommend scheduling your newborn session when baby is 1.5–3 weeks old. This window gives you time to settle in at home while still capturing those fresh, tiny details that change so quickly.

Sessions are usually scheduled for mornings around 10:00 AM, when babies tend to be happiest. Most newborn sessions last about 60–90 minutes, depending on how much feeding and soothing your baby needs that day.

Feeding, Snuggling & Going With the Flow

Expect lots of feeding and cuddling — this is completely normal and very much part of the session. We’ll pause whenever your baby needs to eat or be soothed and simply pick back up when they’re comfortable again.

You may notice that you aren’t constantly changing poses. Instead, I’ll guide you into one simple, comfortable position and move around you to capture different angles and provide alot of variation in your gallery. This keeps things relaxed for you and calm for your baby.

What We’ll Photograph

During your session, we’ll capture a mix of images that tell the full story of this season, including:

  • Whole family photos
  • Individual images with mom and dad
  • Solo shots of your baby, focusing on tiny details and natural moments

A Quick Note About Your Home

Please don’t stress about having a perfectly clean house — I truly don’t care. I do, however, use as much natural light as possible, so if you’re able to declutter around one or two windows, that would be helpful!

We’ll work with what you have and keep things simple, natural, and real.

You may also want to turn the heat up a bit. Babies do much better when they’re nice and toasty, and a warm environment helps everything go more smoothly.

What to Wear

Not sure what to wear? I’ve got you covered. I’m a big fan of light, neutral dresses during newborn sessions. They flow beautifully, photograph softly, and keep the focus on connection and your baby.

After booking, you’ll receive more detailed outfit guidance to help you feel confident and comfortable going into your session. I am a big fan of Worth Collective dresses.

After Your Session

Your fully edited gallery will be delivered within 2–3 weeks of your session. From there, you’ll be able to download your images, order professional prints, and enjoy your memories.

Newborn sessions are meant to feel calm, unrushed, and enjoyable — not like another thing to “get through.” Whether you’re planning an in-home session or a studio session, my role as your Clayton newborn photographer is to guide you every step of the way so you can simply show up, snuggle your baby, and soak it all in.

If any questions come up before your session, I’m always just a message away 🤍
