What to Wear for Summer Maternity Photos

Wondering what to wear for summer maternity photos? The best outfits are made from lightweight, breathable fabrics like chiffon, linen, or soft jersey in neutral, earthy colors. Utilize moisture wicking cooling undergarments. Whether you’re planning an outdoor maternity session in Raleigh or a studio maternity session in Smithfield, choosing comfortable clothing, scheduling around cooler temperatures, and keeping your look simple will help you stay comfortable and create timeless images you’ll love for years to come.

What to Wear for Summer Maternity Photos

Pregnant during a North Carolina summer? Here’s exactly what to wear to stay cool, comfortable, and still get the beautiful maternity photos you’ve been dreaming about.

You Planned for the Baby…But Maybe Not the July Heat

You’ve been saving maternity photo inspiration for months. Every dress is flowy, every field is glowing, and every mom looks absolutely effortless.

Then your due date lands in July or August.

Suddenly you’re wondering how anyone survives an outdoor photo session when simply walking to the mailbox feels like a workout.

If you’re feeling that way, you’re definitely not alone.

As a maternity photographer serving Raleigh, Smithfield, and the surrounding areas, one of the biggest concerns I hear every summer is:

“How am I supposed to look cute when I’m already sweating before I even leave the house?”

The good news? Summer maternity sessions are some of my absolute favorites.

With the right outfit, thoughtful planning, and a photographer who understands that growing a tiny human during a North Carolina summer is no joke, your session can feel relaxed, comfortable, and genuinely fun.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything I recommend to my own clients—from the best fabrics to wear to simple tricks that help you stay cool throughout your session.

Because beautiful maternity photos shouldn’t require suffering through the heat.

What Fabrics Keep You Cool (and Photograph Beautifully)?

If there’s one piece of advice I could give every summer mama, it’s this:

Fabric matters more than the style of the dress.

I’ve seen gorgeous dresses become miserable after twenty minutes simply because they trapped heat.

Instead, look for lightweight, breathable materials that move naturally.

Some of my favorites include:

  • Chiffon
  • Lightweight linen
  • Soft jersey knit
  • Cotton gauze
  • Rayon blends

These fabrics allow air to move, photograph beautifully in the breeze, and create soft movement that adds so much life to your images.

Flowing fabric also catches golden hour light in the prettiest way.

It’s one of those little details that makes a huge difference.

On the other hand, I usually recommend avoiding:

  • Heavy denim
  • Thick structured cotton
  • Velvet
  • Tight bodycon fabrics
  • Anything stiff or heavily lined

While they may look beautiful on the hanger, they often become uncomfortable much faster during a North Carolina summer.

Another tip most moms never think about?

Moisture-wicking shorts or breathable undergarments.

It isn’t glamorous advice, but it can completely change how comfortable you feel during your session.

And trust me—you won’t regret it.

The Best Colors for Summer Maternity Photos

Summer light is bright, warm, and full of life.

Your outfit should complement it instead of competing with it.

Some of my favorite colors are:

  • Cream
  • Ivory
  • Warm white
  • Sage green
  • Dusty blue
  • Soft blush
  • Taupe
  • Light terracotta

These tones photograph beautifully against the tall grasses, wildflowers, lakes, and open fields around Raleigh and Smithfield.

They also keep you cooler than darker colors.

Black may be classic, but it absorbs a lot of heat.

If you’re already warm, you’ll definitely notice the difference.

Hair and Makeup Tips for Summer Sessions

Professional hair and makeup can absolutely be worth it, especially if it helps you feel confident.

But summer requires a slightly different approach.

Instead of heavy foundation or complicated hairstyles, I recommend keeping everything soft and natural.

Loose waves.

A simple updo.

Lightweight makeup with setting spray.

Nothing that requires constant touch-ups throughout the session.

If you normally wear very little makeup, don’t feel pressured to suddenly go full glam for your maternity photos.

The goal isn’t to look like someone else.

It’s to look like the best version of you.

Shoes Matter More Than You Think

When people picture maternity photos, they usually focus on the dress.

I’m usually thinking about the shoes.

Most outdoor locations involve at least a little walking.

Maybe it’s a short trail.

Maybe it’s through a grassy field.

Maybe it’s uneven ground near a lake.

Whatever the location, comfort comes first.

Some of my favorite options are:

  • Barefoot (when the location allows)
  • Neutral sandals
  • Simple flats
  • Low wedges with good support

I generally recommend leaving the tall heels at home for outdoor summer sessions.

Between pregnancy, North Carolina humidity, and uneven ground, they’re usually more stressful than they’re worth.

If you’ve had any swelling during pregnancy, comfortable shoes become even more important.

Trust me—your feet will thank you.

What Should Dad Wear for Summer Maternity Photos?

When planning your maternity session, it’s easy to spend all your time finding the perfect dress and completely forget about Dad’s outfit until the day before.

The good news? Dad doesn’t need anything fancy.

The best outfits are usually the simplest ones.

I always recommend lightweight, breathable fabrics that will keep him comfortable during our session—especially during North Carolina summers. Linen button-downs, lightweight cotton shirts, or a well-fitting polo are all great options.

For colors, stick with soft neutrals and earthy tones that complement your outfit without matching exactly. Cream, beige, light gray, sage green, soft blue, and muted browns all photograph beautifully. These colors also pair perfectly with the natural landscapes around Raleigh, Smithfield, and the surrounding areas.

When it comes to bottoms, khaki pants, chinos, or well-fitted jeans are all great choices depending on the location and overall style you’re going for. If it’s especially hot, tailored shorts can even work for a more relaxed beach or in-home session.

One thing I recommend avoiding is shirts with large logos, busy graphics, or bright neon colors. They tend to draw attention away from the people in the photo and can make your images feel dated much faster.

Most importantly, Dad should wear something he feels comfortable in. If he’s constantly tugging at his shirt or sweating through heavy fabric, it’ll show in the photos just as much as it would for Mom.

My goal is always for your session to feel relaxed and natural, and that starts with everyone being comfortable—including Dad.

My Favorite Dad Outfit Formula

If you’re not sure where to start, this combination almost always works:

  • A linen or lightweight cotton button-down (sleeves rolled up for a relaxed look)
  • Khaki chinos or dark wash jeans
  • Brown leather belt
  • Neutral shoes like loafers, boots, or clean sneakers
  • No sunglasses or bulky items in pockets

Simple, timeless, and comfortable.

At the end of the day, I want people to notice your connection as a family—not your clothes. Choosing classic pieces in breathable fabrics helps create images that will still feel beautiful years from now.

💛 Claire’s Style Tip: If Mom is wearing a flowy cream dress, Dad doesn’t need to wear cream too. Choose a complementary color like sage green, light blue, or taupe instead. Matching outfits can look dated, while coordinated outfits feel timeless.

How to Stay Cool During Your Summer Maternity Session

Let’s be honest—North Carolina summers can be hot, humid, and unpredictable. The last thing I want is for you to spend your maternity session counting down the minutes until it’s over.

A little planning goes a long way, and these are the same tips I share with my maternity clients before every summer session.

Schedule Your Session at the Right Time

One of the biggest ways we beat the heat is by choosing the right time of day.

During the summer, I schedule outdoor maternity sessions either shortly after sunrise or, more commonly, during golden hour just before sunset. Not only is the light absolutely beautiful, but temperatures are usually much more comfortable than they are in the middle of the afternoon.

Midday sessions are generally something I avoid during the summer whenever possible. The harsh sunlight isn’t as flattering, and the extra heat can make the experience much less enjoyable.

Stay Hydrated

Growing a tiny human is already hard work—adding summer heat into the mix means staying hydrated is even more important.

I always recommend bringing a large water bottle with you, and don’t be surprised if I remind you to take a few sips throughout your session. Taking a quick water break only takes a minute, and it helps you feel your best so we can keep creating beautiful images.

If you’re farther along in your pregnancy, adding an electrolyte drink before or after your session can also help you stay hydrated.

Don’t Worry About Taking Breaks

One thing I always tell my clients is this:

There is absolutely no rush.

If you need to sit down for a few minutes, catch your breath, or simply cool off in the shade, we’ll do exactly that.

Some of my favorite images happen after we’ve taken a short break and everyone is feeling refreshed again.

Your comfort will always be more important than squeezing in one more pose.

Bring a Handheld Fan

This is one of my favorite summer session hacks.

A small rechargeable handheld fan can make a huge difference between locations or while we’re setting up the next pose. They’re lightweight, inexpensive, and fit easily into a purse or camera bag.

If you’re looking for one, there are several great rechargeable options on Amazon that work wonderfully for photo sessions.

Dress for the Weather

Choosing breathable fabrics, comfortable shoes, and lightweight layers can make a bigger difference than most people expect.

If you’re debating between two dresses, I almost always recommend the one that’s a little lighter and a little flowier.

You’ll be more comfortable, and it usually photographs even better.

Remember—Your Session Can Be Flexible

If it’s unusually hot on the day of your session, we’ll adapt.

That might mean spending more time in the shade, taking a few extra breaks, shortening the session if needed, or even moving indoors if that’s the best option.

The goal isn’t to power through uncomfortable conditions.

The goal is for you to enjoy this season of life and walk away with photos that remind you of how exciting it was to prepare for your little one—not how hot you were.

One of the things my clients tell me most often is how relaxed their session felt, and that’s exactly how I want you to feel, too.

💛 Claire’s Tip: Throw a small handheld fan, a bottle of ice water, and a snack in your car before you leave for your session. They’re simple things, but they can make a world of difference—especially during those warm Raleigh and Smithfield summer evenings.

Can an Indoor Maternity Session Be Better Than Outdoors?

When most people picture maternity photos, they imagine a glowing sunset in an open field—and don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love outdoor sessions.

But if you’re expecting during the middle of a North Carolina summer, an indoor studio session might actually be the better fit.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that choosing a studio means sacrificing beautiful, natural-looking images.

That couldn’t be further from the truth.

My natural light studio in Smithfield, North Carolina was designed to create timeless, light-filled maternity portraits without worrying about the summer heat, humidity, or unpredictable weather. You’ll still get the soft, airy look you love—just in a comfortable, air-conditioned space where you can truly relax.

Instead of watching the weather forecast or hoping the temperature drops before sunset, you can focus on enjoying this exciting season of life.

There are no bugs.

No walking through tall grass.

No sweating before we even start.

And if you need a quick break, a sip of water, or a chance to cool off, everything is right there.

Another reason many of my moms love the studio is the flexibility. My client wardrobe is available during your studio session, so you don’t have to worry about changing outfits in your car or finding a nearby restroom. Outfit changes are easy, the lighting is always consistent, and we can take our time creating a beautiful gallery without racing against the setting sun.

Some of my favorite maternity portraits have actually been taken right here in the studio. They’re simple, elegant, and completely focused on the connection between you and your growing baby. Years from now, those images will feel just as timeless as the day they were taken. You can see examples of a solo maternity shoot here.

If you’re due during June, July, or August and the thought of standing outside in 90-degree weather doesn’t sound appealing, know that you have options. An indoor maternity session isn’t a backup plan—it’s often the perfect choice.

Whether you choose an outdoor golden hour session or the comfort of my Smithfield studio, my goal is always the same: to create a relaxed, stress-free experience where you feel beautiful, comfortable, and completely yourself.

Your Summer Maternity Photos Should Feel as Good as They Look

There’s something so special about expecting a baby during the summer. Yes, it’s hot. Yes, you might be counting down the days until cooler weather. But it’s also a season full of anticipation, excitement, and the quiet moments before your family changes forever.

Your maternity session shouldn’t feel like another item on your to-do list. It should be an opportunity to slow down, celebrate your growing family, and remember this chapter exactly as it felt.

After photographing maternity sessions throughout Raleigh, Smithfield, and surrounding North Carolina communities, I’ve learned that the most beautiful images aren’t created by wearing the most expensive dress or finding the most perfect location.

They’re created when you’re comfortable.

When you’re laughing with your partner.

When you’re soaking in those tiny kicks.

When you’re able to be fully present instead of worrying about the heat.

That’s why I spend so much time helping my clients prepare before session day. From choosing the perfect outfit to deciding between an outdoor golden hour session or my air-conditioned studio, every recommendation I make is designed to help you have a relaxed, enjoyable experience.

Because years from now, I don’t want you to remember how warm it was.

I want you to remember how excited you were to meet your baby.

If you’re expecting this summer and you’re ready to start planning your maternity session, I’d love to help. Whether you’re dreaming of a glowing sunset in an open field or the comfort of my natural light studio in Smithfield, we’ll create a session that feels authentic to your family and celebrates this incredible season of life.

Summer maternity sessions fill quickly, especially the cooler sunrise and golden hour time slots. If you’re due this summer or early fall, I recommend reaching out during your second trimester to reserve your preferred date.

Frequently Asked Questions About What to Wear for Summer Maternity Photos

When is the best time of day for a summer maternity session?

The best time for a summer maternity session is during golden hour before sunset or shortly after sunrise. These times offer the most flattering light while avoiding the hottest part of the day, making your session much more comfortable—especially during North Carolina summers. Studio session are more flexible and can be done during any day time hours.

What should I do if it’s extremely hot on session day?

If temperatures are unusually high, we’ll adjust our plan. That may mean taking extra water breaks, staying in the shade, shortening the session, or moving to my air-conditioned studio in Smithfield. Your comfort and safety always come first, and we’ll communicate any changes before your session.

How far in advance should I book my summer maternity session?

I recommend booking your maternity session during your second trimester, ideally 2–4 months in advance. Summer evenings fill quickly because they’re the most comfortable time to photograph outdoors, so booking early gives you the best choice of dates.

Can I wear a swimsuit or bikini for my maternity photos?

Absolutely! If you’re envisioning a more intimate or editorial look, a swimsuit, bikini, or maternity lingerie can create beautiful images. These are often best suited for studio or private in-home sessions where you’ll feel relaxed and comfortable.

Do I need to bring a second outfit?

A second outfit is never required, but many moms enjoy having two different looks. A flowy dress paired with a more casual outfit creates variety in your gallery. If you book with me, you’ll also have access to my client wardrobe for additional options.

How long does a summer maternity session usually last?

Most maternity sessions last 60–90 minutes. During the summer, I build in extra flexibility for water breaks, cooling off, and moving between locations at a comfortable pace. There’s never any pressure to rush—we’ll move at whatever pace feels best for you.

What color should I wear for summer maternity photos?

Soft, neutral colors like ivory, cream, sage green, dusty blue, blush, and taupe photograph beautifully during the summer. These shades complement natural landscapes, reflect heat better than darker colors, and create timeless images you’ll love for years to come.

Should my partner match my outfit?

Instead of matching exactly, I recommend coordinating colors. If you’re wearing a cream or blush dress, your partner might wear a sage green, light blue, or beige shirt with neutral pants. Coordinating creates a timeless look while keeping the focus on your connection as a family.

What if I don’t know what to wear?

Don’t worry—you’re not expected to figure it out alone! Every maternity session includes outfit guidance, and you’ll have access to my client wardrobe filled with dresses chosen specifically because they photograph beautifully and flatter a growing bump.

Can we include our older children?

Absolutely! Including siblings is one of my favorite parts of maternity sessions. I’ll guide everyone through natural, playful interactions so your photos feel genuine. For younger children, I recommend keeping outfits lightweight and bringing a few snacks and water to help everyone stay happy and comfortable.

Where do maternity sessions take place?

I offer outdoor maternity sessions throughout Raleigh, Smithfield, Clayton, Goldsboro, and surrounding North Carolina areas, as well as maternity sessions in my natural light studio in Smithfield. Together, we’ll choose the location that best fits your vision and comfort level.

When should I schedule my maternity photos?

The ideal time for maternity photos is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. During this time, your bump is beautifully round, but you’re typically still comfortable enough to enjoy your session. If you’re expecting twins or have a high-risk pregnancy, we may recommend scheduling a little earlier.
